Ref. Article by Mr. Steve Flowers entitled "Do You Know the Free State of Winston?'

Mr. Flowers stated in his article that the election of Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation were the cause of the secession of the southern states. This is incorrect. The election of Lincoln was the trigger as well as the North gaining more and more political power in the federal government.

The Emancipation Proclamation had nothing to do with secession since it was not issued and effective until January 1, 1863, two years after secession.

Another interesting fact about the Proclamation is that it only freed the slaves in the states that were
in rebellion against the United States. It did not apply to the northern states.
