Today is Monday Aug7th and the Friday edition is still online instead of the Sunday edition which should have been posted yesterday. What a terrible lack of responsibility.

Once again someone from the Enterprise was not able to post the Sunday edition online. This is the second week in a row where the Friday edition is still online. Maybe Enterprise leadership can get someone to actually wake up Sunday mornings to post. This has been a frequent occurrence. The cost for subscribing is 2-3 times the cost compared to the Sac Bee, WSJ, Ny times, and it is only published 3 times weekly. I would like to support our local newspaper but not being able to post the Sunday edition online has been a little frustrating.

It is annoying to experience the login NOT working when I have paid for a year of service and have not changed my password. Perhaps you can change the login to recognize subscribers and allow subscribers to read articles without having to login. A local paper is vital and should be easy to access by subscribers so as to encourage other people to subscribe.

This review is an excerpt from a letter I recently wrote the publisher and owners of #TheDavisEnterprise. It was greeted with silence by all concerned. This helps explains why the paper is largely ignored in our community. 'Ignore your readers and your readers will ignore you.'

Wanting to support local news in my new community, I recently took out a digital subscription to #TheDavisEnterprise for $60 a year. For comparison, one can subscribe to The New York Times, The Guardian, The Washington Post, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and numerous other newspapers and magazines for less than what this paper is charging readers.

Now that I’ve had a couple of weeks with the subscription I can say unequivocally that $60 for digital and $72 for print isn’t competitive. A more reasonable subscription rate would be $22 for digital and $36. The Enterprise would get a lot more readers at this price.

My digital subscription only works on my computer. There is apparently no app for smart phones and tablets, thus when I try to read the paper on my iPad, or iPhone, I have to log in for each article. Not that there’s much to read. There’s an advice column by a woman in New York that oddly gets top billing, along with public service announcements, obituaries, letters, press releases, opinion pieces, events calendar, and some bits about local business and sports, mostly male sports. As best as I can tell, there are no actual journalists writing for the paper. Most news articles look to be republished from other sources.

Maybe this is why the articles I read show about four others have also read them. With all the choices we have for news and information, the only reason to subscribe to a local publication is to keep up on what’s happening locally. Nobody appears to be covering the issues at City Hall, the spiralling costs of housing in Davis, the stunning homelessness in our community, or stories about the people who live and work here. This is what local journalism is about, without this what’s the point?

While having a good look around The Davis Enterprise, I also took a look at the McNaughton Media website, owner of this newspaper along with Fairfield’s Daily Republic and Placerville’s Mountain Democrat. They don’t only need to hire journalists, they also need to hire a good copywriter and editor. Readers are not ‘customers’, as they refer to us. If we don’t read #TheDavisEnterprise there is no product.

I appreciate that producing a community newspaper is a daunting job, but if #TheDavisEnterprise covered local news for a fair price and invested in making a digital app that works on all platforms, they would have plenty of engaged readers.
